Backpacking is an incredible opportunity to explore new places without having to spend a fortune. However, it does limit your space and weight, because you literally carry everything on your back wherever you go. And since staying in hostels usually isn’t very luxurious, you need to come prepared.

It is therefore important to be selective, organised, and practical. Whether you’re about to set off on your first journey or you’ve been on the road before, I’m sure you’ll find this list helpful. This is my Amazon packing list, and everything is linked if you’re interested. Simply click on each number to get yours.

1. My Backpack

This one is obvious, but I absolutely love my Osprey Fairview 50L. I’m 167 cm tall, so anything bigger feels too heavy and bulky on me. This size forces me to pack light while still bringing all the essentials. In addition, I bring a 20L daypack, and this holy combo works perfectly for me.

2. Microfibre Towel(s)

This is essential, as many hostels don’t provide towels at all. Personally, I like to bring two: one for the beach and one for showers. Microfibre towels are ideal because they dry quickly and don’t take up much space.

3. AirTags

I have them everywhere: in my wallet, my daypack, and my main backpack. It’s purely for safety and peace of mind, and I love being able to track my backpack whenever I check luggage.

4. Travel Adapter

Different countries—even within the same region—often use different plugs. A universal travel adapter is critical for charging your devices. The one I’ve linked is amazing because it allows you to charge multiple devices at the same time.

5. Passport Protection

I learned this the hard way. I was in Australia when my passport got completely soaked in a rainstorm. Going to the embassy to get a new one is not fun and very expensive. Since travelling often involves boats, beaches, and unpredictable weather, protecting your passport is so important.

6. Packing Cubes

Trust me on this—this is a game changer. Packing cubes help you stay organised and make repacking every few days so much easier. Having a separate laundry bag is also super helpful when it’s time to do washing.

7. Dry Bag

As mentioned, backpacking—especially in Asia and Australia—involves a lot of boat rides, snorkelling, or scuba diving. A dry bag to protect your belongings is incredibly useful. I’ve wished I had one many times before I finally got one.

8. Kindle

This one isn’t for everyone, but if you like reading while travelling, a Kindle is a must. Books are heavy, take up unnecessary space, and it can be hard to find books in English (or your language) while travelling. For me, this was absolutely essential.

9. Padlocks

Small but necessary. Most hostels have lockers to store your valuables, but you usually need to bring your own padlock. I recommend one with a code rather than a key.

10. Carabiner Hook

This is so useful. If you struggle to fit bulky sneakers or a water bottle inside your backpack, clipping them onto the outside is a lifesaver—especially when travelling from one hostel to another rather than checking luggage on a flight.
