Have you been thinking about solo traveling for a long time, but don’t feel like you are brave enough or ready? Let me share some of my experiences.
I have, since I was young, dreamed of traveling and seeing all the corners of the world we live in. I knew I wanted to study abroad, though I didn’t have anyone to go with. I decided it was time to explore the world regardless, and at the age of 19, I set off and moved to Australia.
I had a boyfriend at the time, and the long distance didn’t work out well for us. My first months abroad were horrible, as I was experiencing my very first heartbreak — completely by myself on the other side of the world with people I barely knew. On top of that, my grandpa died days after the breakup, and I felt like my world was falling apart. Nothing turned out the way I had dreamed of. The only thing I wanted was to go home. I pushed through the rest of the semester and went home as soon as I could.
After a few months at home, mentally landing from the mess, I felt stronger, and the urge to challenge myself and do something for me. I wanted to get away, but I found no one to go with. I decided it was time to stop waiting for others, and that’s when I booked my first solo trip. I booked a week in Lake Como, Italy. I booked a hostel, completely unsure of what to expect, but at least I would give it a shot.

It turned out to be the most revolutionary week of my life. I met incredible people — locals and other travelers — and I felt like I looked at the world with brand new eyes. It sounds cliché, but it’s true. That single week completely changed my life, how I perceive myself, my confidence, and what I’m capable of. I went back to Australia after the semester break with fresh eyes and a brand-new mindset. I have since then been on multiple solo trips in Europe, Asia, and Australia — short and long. It is, hands down, the best thing I do for myself.
Now, at the age of 22, I have finished my degree, been to 30 countries, and without a doubt, created the best memories of my life traveling solo. You’ll meet incredible strangers who turn into family and build an amazing network of people from all around the globe. Moreover, you will learn so much about yourself and your capabilities. Truly, there is nothing that can stop you after you set out on your own.
If you are contemplating booking your first solo trip but are not sure where to start or if you are brave enough, I can tell you this: you will never feel quite ready. One day, you will just feel brave enough to try — and that day could be now. Start small, and when you are comfortable, travel longer and further. Let this be your sign. Book your trip today.
